New York Burial at Sea

Outstanding Year Round Service from The South Street Sea Port

American Princess Cruises - New York City, New Jersey, Long Island, Queens and Brooklyn

Your commemorative service aboard our ship will be memorable.   A representative of Sea Services can be there to attend to all details assuring that you and your guest can relax with peace of mind.  The ship is spacious with interior seating and has a canopied upper deck.  Our ship mates are there to assist you, to be sure your voyage is safe and pleasant.

You will sail out of New York Harbor; pass the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  As the boat travels out to sea with the New York skyline behind, you may choose to photograph the scenery or remain with family and friends.  Your memorial service is designed by you.  Many bring aboard flowers, music, collages of pictures, and some choose religious services at this time.  We can help to arrange many services, or you may wish your own clergy for readings and prayer.

You may also decide to put the urn or container of your loved one on view.  We will set up a table covered in white cloth at the bow of the boat where flowers may be laid, and pictures displayed.

Musicians are available for your service such as a violinist and cello player from the New York Julliard School of Music.

Upon arrival at the site of internment, someone will carry the urn or container to the rear of the boat, while flowers or flower petals are distributed to your guest.  The scattering may be performed by a family member or mate, followed by your guest tossing the flowers into the water.  If a biodegradable urn is used, a mate will place the urn in a basket, which is then gently lowered into the water.    A few minutes are spent at the site, as the boat pulls away; the captain circles the area as a sign of respect, and then blows the ship’s horn in honor.

The trip back may be a time to gather, have a snack and something to drink.  You and your guest may bring aboard food and beverages or you may decide to dine at any one of 35 restaurants and eateries in the South Street Sea Port.
